The Whatcom Museum of History and Art was built in 1892 and was the city hall for the former city of New Whatcom. It is on the US National Register of Historic Places for its significance in art and historical architecture; its construction marked the beginnings of a permanent American settlement in the area, after a gold rush led to a boom in nearby British Columbia to the north.
