Gastown is a designated Canadian National Historic Site and Vancouver's first downtown core; it was named after "Gassy" Jack Deighton, a steamboat captain and owner of the area's first saloon. It became the center of the lumber and port industry and was once the western terminus of the cross-country Canadian Pacific Railway. As a result, the City of Vancouver was incorporated around this area in 1886. However, the area declined during the Great Depression before being designated a historic district in the 1960s. Today, Gastown is a mix of tourist shops, art galleries, restaurants and nightclubs. The photo above was taken adjacent to the Gastown Steam Clock, the most prominent landmark in the district.
